Intro

Doug:

I’m going to mix it up this week. Liz,

Liz:

You do you…

Doug:

Just stop the show Liz! Play along with me, we’ve done this 36 times. So welcome to The Seller Community Podcast from List Perfectly. This is episode 37. The seller community podcast is brought to you weekly by List Perfectly for your enjoyment and listening pleasure. You can find show notes at thesellercommunitypodcast.com/podcast. What’s up Liz?

Liz:

Not much, Doug. How are you?

Doug:

I’m doing well. Have you been busy the last couple of weeks? You got anything coming up? What’s been going on?

Liz:

We have both been busy. We’re just getting back from the BOSS Reseller Remix event that was just held in Las Vegas. I do have a little bit of conference voice going here…

Doug:

You sound like Vegas, actually.

Liz:

I sound like Vegas. Yeah. I feel like Vegas.

Doug:

If Vegas had a sound, it would be your voice.

Liz:

Oh my goodness. I feel like Vegas hit me.

Doug:

Yeah. We were there for a week at the BOSS Reseller Remix. It was frankly an amazing event. 200 something plus sellers, biggest in-person face-to-face event of the year and the start of something big. They already announced they’re going to do it again next year. It was a lot of fun. We saw old friends, we made new friends. We did a lot of recording. We took a lot of pictures. We’re working on a recap episode that will run next week with some interviews we did from there. And then, we are going to ask you to do something special.

Liz:

What are we going to ask our listeners to do Doug?

Doug:

So what we want you to do is if you were at the BOSS Reseller Remix and you would like to chime in or share your experience, or just talk about it a little bit, you can go to anchor.fm/sellercommunitypodcast, and you can record your voice there, leave us a voice message and tell us what you, you know, give us a review of the event, what stood out and then we will take some of them and we’ll put them on our recap episode next week.

Liz:

I can’t wait. And I hope people do call in.

Doug:

Yeah, I’m sure some will. And we’ll push that. You know, we’ll push out on our socials. Maybe we’ll post in the List Perfectly Facebook group. We can even post in the Reseller Remix Facebook group.

Liz:

Right? What I loved about this is I walked into this feeling like I knew so many people, but when I got there, I realized how many people I actually had not met in person. Even more surprisingly, how many people were in attendance that had never been to a reseller event.

Doug:

Yeah, that was amazing. The number of sellers that this was their first selling event and they were hooked. Because it was such a great event. Then obviously Liz, the accolades, it was amazing. The number of people that were fans of the show and listened to the show came up and you know, told us that they were frequent listeners and asked us if we could do more apps every week because they were caught up.

Liz:

Yes. And I am so appreciative of all of you. It actually it’s, you know, we can tell people listen, but to put a face and to have real conversations with people that listened to us was actually fantastic.

Doug:

It was very cool. Very cool to meet listeners and make some new ones. I hope.

Liz:

Yes. So if you did hear about us from the BOSS, Reseller Remix, welcome to the show!

Doug:

So new listeners end old, we do a monthly live cast where we kind of go over the past months episodes and kind of recap them, answer some questions that come up and then take some questions live. So this week we are running last month’s live cast recap. We recap the episode and we had some questions that we answered. So we thought we would offer it up to you. It’s like a greatest hits collection, Liz.

Liz:

Yes. So it’s a little recap. If you missed those episodes, get your interest, go back and listen to the whole episode.

Doug:

A teaser, a trailer. So you might say, hopefully we’ve got a ton of new listeners from Reseller Remix. And again, chime in, we’ll remind you at the end of the episode and then Liz, I’m going to go crazy old school on this one. So Liz, we have a ton of Seller Community Podcast stickers. I think we have three types. So here’s what I want people to do. If you want a sticker, you can put it out, it’s a good reminder for you. You can put it on your bumper. You can put it on your forehead. You can put it around your neighborhood. You can get it tattooed. And remember kids, tattoos are for life. Get it permanently tattooed.

Liz:

For a normal person, you can put it on your laptop. You can put it on your water bottle or your Trapper Keeper.

Doug:

Yes. Trapper Keeper would be good. Your little red Trapper Keeper. So here’s what I want you to do. If you are interested in stickers, you can email us at podcast@thesellercommunitypodcast.com and I’ll give you instructions. And basically the instructions are, I’ll be like send a self-addressed stamped envelope. So kids. So you knew kids back in the day, we used to send stuff via mail. So you have an envelope. You write addresses on there and you put a stamp on it. And back in the day, I love this cause it’s throwbacky. If you wanted to get something free, like let’s say Liz, a sticker, you would send what they call an SASE, a self-addressed stamped envelope. So what you will do is you will send an envelope to me, Doug, and I will send back three stickers to you. So put a stamp on the envelope. I don’t want this to be like an overwhelming viral thing with millions of people responding and costing me a ton of stamps. So all we’re asking for is basically the cost of two stamps to you. One to mail me the self-addressed stamped envelope. And then I will take that, put the stickers in. Maybe I’ll write you a note. I don’t know. I don’t want paparazzi camping out in front of my house. I don’t want to see that. So that’s why we’re doing it via email. So we keep it a little bit…I need to maintain my privacy Liz.

Liz:

There you go. I’ve got my stickers. I’ve got them on my water bottle. I’ve got them on my laptop. I’ve got a couple extra. So when Doug runs out, we have more and then we’ll just switch it over to me taking care of the self-addressed stamped envelopes.

Doug:

There you go. So a self-addressed stamped envelope for stickers. Go to anchor.fm/sellercommunitypodcast And leave your little message. What else Liz, anything? Wait a minute. Stop the show Liz.

Liz:

Oh my goodness.

Doug:

You know how I love to be on people’s stuff, right? Yes. So my livecast with Consignment Chats. So we recorded this the week before, just so you know, actually we’re time travelers. We are time travelers Liz…so next week, Tuesday…

Liz:

Yesterday.

Doug:

Oh yeah. Good, good, good catch Liz.

Liz:

Oh my gosh.

Doug:

This was yesterday, Liz in this technical I haven’t recorded yet, but if you’re listening today, yesterday I was on with Consignment Chats and I’m sure it was amazing, but anyway, that’s going to be under YouTube and I’m sure that I will link it everywhere 50 times so you can see it. So Liz, what you got, can you top that?

Liz:

First off? I have to say, you know, for people that don’t know, Doug has a full-time job outside of this podcast and outside of traveling to the Reseller Remix and on top of doing interviews with Consignment Chats, talking, all things, selling and Snoop Dougie, and I’m a seller in the community on different Facebook groups, and doing this podcast. And we just got back from the BOSS Reseller Remix on Monday. So this has been in the works for a while. So I will spill the beans. Monday I had the opportunity to be on somebody’s show too Doug.

Doug:

You’re going to top me.

Liz:

I heard you were on Consignment Chats. And I knew that was going to be a hard one to top.

Doug:

I got to step it up. Who are you on with Liz?

Liz:

Now I feel Really bad. Doug, I swear I don’t try and one-up.

Doug:

Why? I’m very proud of you.

Liz:

I did 18 satellite interviews on Monday for various TV and radio stations across the United States. Some were live, some were pre recorded. So eBay reached out to me regarding their Equitable Entrepreneurship Empowering Women Through E-commerce report. And they included me in that. And so this was all about how the pandemic has disproportionately affected women and how women have found their way selling online to support their families through e-commerce. And I just got to tell some stories about how I got started and how, what I’ve seen in our community and how women have really been able to step up and how e-commerce has helped them keep money coming into the household. Wow. That’s pretty freaking cool. I mean, how cool is that?

Doug:

That’s better than Snoop Dougie dropping eighties movie references. No, but that’s cool. And that’s a lot of big words, Liz.

Liz:

It was. I hope I didn’t mess any of them up.

Doug:

You wanna practice?

Liz:

No, I already did it. It’s already recorded tomorrow, yesterday, and last week.

Doug:

You don’t want to come on my wacky morning show?

Liz:

I’ll come on your wacky morning show and we can recap the satellite media tour.

Doug:

All right, everybody. Thanks for coming onto the show this morning, we’ve got a special guest Liz O’Kane talking about eBay lady entrepreneurs and selling online. Welcome to the show, Liz.

Liz:

Hey, thanks so much. I feel like I just did this.

Doug:

Was it just like that?

Liz:

Yeah, it was just like that. It was just like that.

Doug:

No, but seriously, this is awesome. They couldn’t have picked a better online seller advocate and you know, you create experience and I can’t wait to, hopefully, you know, we can see and hear these.

Liz:

Absolutely. I’m going to try and get as much as I can. Of course they’ll be providing me with links. Some of these are going to be live. Some of these were pre recorded, so, and it’s everywhere. Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Minneapolis. I don’t know. There were 18 different media outlets. It was pretty awesome. And what I really loved about this is eBay gave me a voice to tell the story, as I know it. And eBay told me we don’t want this to be an eBay commercial. We really want this to be about women in e-commerce and how we were disproportionately affected from the workplace during this pandemic. So I thought that was really cool. And I thought it was really cool that they wanted a seller’s perspective and not an executive’s perspective reading off of a report.

Doug:

Yeah, no, that’s great. And again, they picked the right seller.

Liz:

Well, thank you. I could think of about a million other sellers that could have done a great job. I mean, maybe they could have got Snoop Dougie and Consignment Chats. Actually. I might’ve put that in my outbrief then like, hey, if you need anybody…

Doug:

Like a backup 30 or 40 people down the line. Are you going to watch my thing with Consignments Chats in the future?

Liz:

Of course.

Doug:

It’s very confusing to us as well. We have to look at a calendar.

Liz:

Actually Doug, I didn’t watch it live. Can I tell a big…Oh, wait. Yeah. Well, Yeah, because I was speaking at the San Jose Meetup, I got asked to speak at the San Jose Meetup. So I did that too. Surprised I’m going to have a voice left by the end of this month, but I like to talk. So not a problem.

Doug:

And the funny thing is, is you were telling people that I was going to be on Consignment Chats and how busy I am, but you’ve got all your appearances and stuff. You need a manager. If I get a top hat and a cigar, can I be your manager?

Liz:

Oh, you got it. You’ve got it. Let’s do that.

Doug:

All right. Well, that’s cool. That’s awesome. Part of the community and selling online changes people’s lives and that we love being a part of it.

Liz:

So super cool. I was super stressed. If you know me, I stress out about these things. I stress out about going on our own lives with, you know, 30 of our listeners and friends, which is so cool because now I know some of the people in the chat we’ve met, we’ve met one-on-one at the BOSS Reseller Remix. So there’s this better connection that we have with our community now.

Doug:

And then here’s a little behind the scenes type of thing. And I think I talked about it, but it’s funny because Liz is, Liz is a little more organized, I guess you’d say than I am and shy. But Liz is like, well, can we come up with some bullets or some reference points? We never wanted to do scripts and we, we don’t, we just have some, like, there’s some stuff we say to update you links and stuff and some information, but we usually go off like, you know, bullet points or something like that. And Liz is like, can we do some bullet points for the live casts? And I’m like, I’ve got some crazy post-it notes. I scrawl some stuff and just kinda go off the top of my head. Enough of my yakkin’. Should we get into the live cast recap?

Liz:

Let’s go ahead and give the live cast recap where our listeners can listen to more of Doug and Liz.

Doug:

And remember, this is like a kind of a greatest hits or, you know, like every once in a while Seinfeld would do the best jokes of the season…

Livecast Recap

Doug:

You’re warmed up? We’re live. Yeah, no profanity. There’s a five second delay. We’ve warmed up our voices. We’re ready to rock and roll.

Liz:

Welcome everyone to the seller community podcast. Live casting is so new to me. If you guys don’t know, haven’t heard I’m nervous for lives…

Doug:

Yeah. Live without a net. You want me to just drop out or freeze up? You got this? The Liz Show? Ladies and gentleman, The Liz O’kane show!

Liz:

Do not leave me!

Doug:

Thanks everybody for listening in and great to be here. So we’re going to do a little episodical recap. Talk about some stuff, and hopefully there are questions that you have that we will endeavor to answer.

Liz:

What do you say, Doug? Should we get started?

Doug:

Yes, let’s get started. What’s up Liz?

Liz:

Not much, Doug. How are you? How’s your Wednesday? The middle of the week…

Doug:

It’s been good. I’m very excited about the livecast. Very excited to you know, do the recap, answer some questions. And I always say List Perfectly questions, selling questions, movie questions, music questions. And it’s one of the best months of the year. It’s October, which is Halloween. And I’m a big fan of horror. So if you have any horror questions, anything like that, we have been answering. We can ask Liz what her favorite scary movie is. What’s your favorite scary movie, Liz?

Liz:

I don’t have one. I’m not, you guys…I’m horrible. I’m horrible at music and movies. You’re putting me on the spot. I’m sorry. That’s okay. That’s okay. You caught me off guard.

Doug:

Well, let’s get started. Let’s take it from the top.

Liz:

Let’s do it. I just wanted to take a moment and shout out to things that happened in the seller community this week. First off, I want to just say congratulations to Barbara Colson. She recently started using List Perfectly, and this is a post that she put in the Facebook group. I’m sorry, Barb. I didn’t ask your permission, but this is huge kudos. So before she started using List Perfectly on a regular basis, her Etsy store was around 400 bucks. She started using List Perfectly, her August, total. So in July was $433. She started using List Perfectly in August. It went up to over $1,600 when she started cross posting. So I think that is amazing. And Barb is, she sells a lot of books, collectibles, cookbooks, small electronics, coffee, mugs, games, that type of thing. So, she’s making bank, just cross posting and adding that extra platform. So congrats, Barb.

Doug:

That’s epic. Congrats, Barb. And that’s my mom’s name is Barb too.

Liz:

Your mom must be cool then.

Doug:

I call her mom in case she’s listening. Mom. Love you. You’re super cool.

Liz:

Your mom’s not listening.

Doug:

I don’t think so. She’ll listen, after the fact and then ask me a bunch of questions, why did you say that, why did you make that joke?

Liz:

Do you want to announce the next…or do you wanna keep going?

Doug:

Let’s keep going.

Liz:

We’ll do jokes. No, that’s Mer. I see her in the chat. Hey, I told Doug, I was talking to my friend the other day and I dropped your name and he got scared.

Doug:

Yeah, Liz and my lovely wife, Meredith or mertinimercantile are having conversations on the side about shows that they watch without me. By the way, everybody shoutout to Alex Shadrow, sustainabae who is in the background. She’s our Dr. Dre today. Our Nile Rodgers, our Rick Rubin producing the show in the background, making us look and sound good. But she was on with Rhonda pinkdivastudio, and they talked about sustainability and reselling and fashion. And it’s on the pinkdivastudio. IGTV. Pinkdivastudio is awesome. She does all kinds of stuff. Lots of motivational stuff. She’s always on Instagram. And she’s definitely a friend of ours and a friend of a List Perfectly. And she does interviews every Wednesday with live interviews with members of the selling community.

Liz:

Yeah. Brunch With Diva. Go check her out on Instagram. And Alex especially did a sustainability episode.

Doug:

Very nice. And her favorite color is obviously pink. She has cool glasses that she’s wearing…

Liz:

Glasses. Yes.

Doug:

I’ve seen her husband on there too. She does some fun stuff with her husband too. It’s cool. She’s got a fun channel. All right. Hey, I got to jump in because it’s live and you know, I like to go like off the cuff. It drives Liz batty she likes to plan, but I’m going to go off the cuff. First, Ed, the resellingrider, he said he made an extra 7K since starting List Perfectly because of cross posting. And he’s going to upgrade to the pro plan because of the photo room integration. So that’s cool, dude, 1987ventures, Tracy, one of her favorite horror movies is The Changeling ever seen it? Yes, Tracy. I’ve seen it many times. That’s one of the ones I whip out. It’s very atmospheric. I love it. It’s got one of the best openings in movie history. I think very scary. And it’s one of those creepy build type of things. And I love it because it’s kind of like a classic horror, haunted house, ghost story type of thing, but that’s a great choice. That’s your favorite? That’s, that’s a solid one with George C. Scott. So thank you Tracy for that. And thanks Ed theresellingrider for the comment and sorry, Alex, to jump in, but those just popped into my head.

Liz:

I think Doug, you’re loving this. You guys have to remember. We’re used to doing the podcast and I can stop and start whenever I want. And I have a lot of awkward pauses and ums. And so this is new to me. This is new to me. We’re going to keep it going.

Doug:

Oh, but Liz is doing great. I don’t mind live. I like off the cuff, so it’s not going to be perfect, but it’s good. But we are used to what’s funny when we do the podcast is we usually talk and record two or three times as much as we use. So we talk, we get warmed up, we catch up, we talk about different kinds of stuff. And then, you know, it gets edited up, but we want it to be very conversational. But we talk to like, for instance, maria thestylister or when we interviewed her, we got like an hour and a half of content. And it was some, you know, we talked a lot about supply chain stuff at the very beginning, things like that. And then just some other stuff. And then we narrowed that down to half an hour and then Liz and I usually when we’re trying to get half an hour, usually it takes us an hour, hour, and a half. Cause we get warmed up and we chat. A little inside info there, behind the scenes.

Liz:

Behind the scenes. It’s different on this end , Doug, this whole Facebook live.

Doug:

Yeah. There’s a lot going on. It’s like a shuttle launch in here. I’ve got two laptops. My phone, the mixer, multiple documents open. I’m going back and forth.

Liz:

You told me that you were coming in hot, sticky notes. No, no background check. What’s going on here.

Doug:

Here’s my notes. So which I can barely read. I have the, the writing of a, since it’s October, writing of a serial killer or a doctor, there’s a fine crossover there.

Liz:

Seeing the comments on the side is comforting to me right now because doing these lives is just nerve wracking for me. So your comments all in the side is making me feel more at home. I feel like I’m just in the Facebook group. And like I’m doing some talk to texts, Facebook or something.

Doug:

Yes. We’re among friends and I’ve got to say it since we’re on YouTube. I’ve got to say hit that thumbs up. Subscribe, comment. We should have started out with, Hey guys, isn’t that what everybody starts out with? Hey guys. So Nicole is asking me about the Houses October Built. I know I’ve seen it. I think it’s on my queue. I haven’t seen the movie. I haven’t seen the movie, but it’s in my queue. That’s what I’m trying to say. Cause that’s the other thing I do is I literally, my wife will tell you I’ll literally spend hours going through and adding stuff to the queue. So every streaming channel, I have a giant queue and I love movie trailers. So I’ll watch trailers. I’ll watch like trailers all night.

Liz:

I know this because Mer and I talk about our TV watching habits and we have a, we’re finally catching up on our shows.

Doug:

There’s one I’m excited about on Netflix. It’s Midnight Mass. I want to see that one. I don’t have a ton of time to watch shows, but we watch on the weekends.

Liz:

It looks like consignmentchats is in here. Colleen Gallagher made it. Hey, Theresa made it. If I missed anybody, I’m sorry. I don’t really know what I’m doing, but we’re going to catch up.

Doug:

All right, Liz, I got to stop the show. Franklinhillventures says that I look like Adrian Cronauer. I forget who that is, but I hope it’s good. I need to Google it. Do I look like the young Adrian Cronauer or the old Adrian Cronauer, you know, I had to stop because of that. All right. So Liz, let’s go back. Liz, let’s go back. Let’s start with episode 29, mertinimercantile. Yes. So yeah, that was a great story. We talked to her about growing her business and how she does a lot of handmade arts and crafts, a lot of handmade stuff. And she came from the corporate world and is building that back up, had to take a few months off. And then it’s slowly building that back up. Had some success with some masks, had some success with some adult themed cookware, I guess you’ll say.

Liz:

Some novelty items that were, that are quite successful. But that handmade market on Etsy that is just it’s foreign to me because I don’t sell on Etsy and I’m not at home. Like I can’t even, I’m not a homey person. Like I can barely sew a button. Right. So all of that is just so cool to me. And it’s really turned me on to see a little bit more and looking around on LinkedIn, I actually just shared, they have a virtual Etsy home. Yeah. Maybe I’ll share it in the Facebook. Yeah. So it’s at the home and they have a virtual house that you can walk through with products that are for sale. I did look at the kitchen Mer. I’m so sorry. Your aprons didn’t make it, but I think we need to email Etsy and tell them that they need to hang your apron up in the kitchen.

Doug:

So that’s interesting. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to tease you. So if you haven’t listened to the episode, these are maybe a little inside info, a little bit of a recap, a little tease. I’m not going to, as they would say, lift the apron up too much or open the kimono, Liz. I wait till Liz drinks. So, you have to figure, you have to see what the secret sauce is with those aprons. But that Etsy shop is cool.

Liz:

Yeah, it really is and I think Doug sometime in the next couple months, we’re planning another Etsy episode.

Doug:

Yeah. We talked about that yesterday.

Liz:

We have some cool stuff coming up with Etsy.

Doug:

Get somebody in maybe from Etsy, you know, do that. So that’s the teaser. What else?

Liz:

That was a fun episode. That was a fun episode. But for those that don’t know, and that maybe didn’t listen, Mer is the better half of Doug Smith.

Doug:

Yeah. The better half. She’s a Saint. She puts up with me, she’s the glue.

Liz:

She had to close down to move you into a new house.

Doug:

That’s right. Cause I needed, you know, she’s my best friend for a long time. 30 something years, we’ve been married 18, 19 years. And we have two wonderful children, Liz and we like long walks on the beach and things like that…no, she is very cool.

Liz:

She is. So, but check out that episode, episode 29 with mertinimercantile, how she had to stop her business and then start it back up. So as she’s growing, I’m holding you to it, Mer. I want to see your growth. With that episode 31 consignmentchats who is in the chat. Yes. Also. So hopefully if there’s any questions you can follow up, that was just a great episode. I’ve been following consignmentchats. So for those that don’t know, they started their podcast pretty much like the same month we did they’re ahead of us, Doug,

Doug:

Which is fun.

Liz:

They do have a YouTube channel. They put their stuff on YouTube. I’m number 35. If you check out episode 35, you can learn a little bit more about Liz. Listen to episode 30, one of The Seller Community Podcast to listen to Tiffany, Molly and Libby talk about consignmentchats, consignment in the community, but go to their YouTube channel consignmentchats and check out episode 37 because it’s going to tie in to episode 33 of The Seller Community Podcast. So I just wanted to throw that out there before we get to 33.

Doug:

Ties together. Great ladies. They may be getting aprons we don’t know yet. We’ll see. That was a fun chat. That was another one though, that we went on, we did a lot at the beginning. Then we recorded, we did a lot of the end and we’re like, we should, we should start a podcast together. The five of us, because that’s not enough people talking at once. Yeah. It was fun. We laughed a lot. Super cool. And Liz, they heard my plea. And they’re going to have me on the show. I got tired of being Jan and Liz is Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha, will you come on the eBay podcast? Marsha, will you interview our CEO? Marsha, will you come on our show? And nobody wants to know, but the consignmentchats girls came through and I’m going to be on their show.

Liz:

Yeah. Your deposits will be in the mail. Thanks for taking care of him.

Doug:

And by the way, I’m just going to say, it may be a very special episode. Like an After-School special. You might learn. The more you learn the better, you know…

Liz:

Learn more about Doug, Snoop Dougie on consignmentchats on an upcoming episode, listen to episode 30, one of this other community podcast for more about consignment in the selling community. And I don’t even do consignment selling, but I follow consignment chats religiously on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, because there’s a lot of great stuff there.

Doug:

And what they talk about is true. Like, if you’re a seller, somebody’s going to ask you to sell their stuff. And we’ve all, we’ve all done that I’ve got some stacked up stuff that I’m going to sell and they, they give you some great tips on there. And then they’re Canva Pro experts. So they’ve got some great Canva tips on making your graphics. A great episode. They are a great resource, great YouTube channel. They have their own podcast. They have their own Facebook group. So go check them out.

Liz:

If you have any questions, ask, we’re used to just doing voice recording. Doug can see you. This is live on video.

Doug:

Striking my hand, scratching my nose.

Liz:

So if you have any follow-up questions about consignment or consignmentchats, make sure that you follow them in their Facebook group — Consignment Chats.

Doug:

Yes. All right. Are we ready to move onto this one? Liz Julien from the eBay VERO team came on, very nice guy. VERO, such a weird subject, and nobody knows about it. And is there a list? Isn’t there a list? So he came on, quite a very busy guy, took quite a bit of effort to get him on the show. So we appreciate him coming on, working with the eBay Corporate Comms team to get him to come on the show and talk about VERO and understandably, it’s kind of a touchy subject because it deals with big brands and what they want to control. They want to protect their brands. And well, my favorite part was, well, we all have, I think we all have some sort of VERO violation that we admit. Mine was like “compatible with Lego.” Cause I’m hoping to get the Lego traffic. And he was like, “Lego probably wouldn’t like that.” And then I loved that he had to shut his mom down cause she was trying to use pictures from somewhere. And then Liz even admitted, she’s done some VEROesque stuff.

Liz:

That if you’ve been…so we need to talk about VERO because there’s so much misinformation in our community about VERO, really what it is now. I mean, we could probably talk VERO for an entire week and not come to a final conclusion about what VERO is and isn’t because it’s so tricky and it’s not a perfect program. I think we all know that. I think if you’ve been a seller, I’ve been selling for 19 years, if you’ve been a seller for 19 years and haven’t gotten a VERO good on you because it’s hard to follow all of these rules that are out there. But we talk about in the episode kind of why these rules are in place. Why? It’s law. I mean really some of it’s, their hands are tied from law. But yeah, so I think that it was a really good episode that kind of scratched the surface about what VERO is. But you look like you’re about ready to say something big Doug.

Doug:

What was funny too is, and we edited some of this out, but we left some of it in, but there were a few times where we would each be like, so let’s say, or he would say something, it’d be like, well, let’s say I have this pen and the logo’s on it. And I own it. And I use my own pictures and he’s like, it’s not a problem to sell it. And we’d be like, are you sure? And he’s like, yeah, I run the program. I’m sure what if I have these Nike shoes and I take my own pictures, are they on the VERO list? He’s like, there’s no VERO list. Technically it’s kind of a technicality. There’s no technical VERO list. That is like, Liz’s pens. You can’t sell them because they’re on this list. But there is a list of brands that have put guidelines on eBay’s VERO pages that this is the stuff we look for. Some are stricter than others. And as Liz pointed out, sometimes brands come in and get hardcore and then get pushed back by eBay if they are infringing on, on the sellers. And then the interesting thing though, is they kind of hand, they do kind of hand it off a little bit is like the brand came in. Here’s the contact cause they’re the platform, right?

Liz:

Yeah. It’s, I mean, it’s just such a tricky subject and you know, I’m just not perfect. And sometimes I just didn’t know the rules or whatever, for whatever reason, you know, I’ve had maybe two or three over 19 years, there is a VERO page. Right. And it tells you about what happened to my listing or I want to report a rights violation. Let’s see if you’re a rights owner. We edited this episode and poor Doug does the editing. It’s the DMCA act, right? Doug federal law that they have to comply with. It gets complicated. I’m not a lawyer or whatever, but it really goes down to don’t call Nike shoes Converse. Don’t, you know, use your own pictures. Don’t copy and paste the items, descriptions into your listing. Do people do it? They do it every day. They get away with it. And we hear this every day. Well, my listing got taken down, but there’s a hundred others. The big thing was, is there a VERO list? And we keep hearing there’s a VERO list. He adamantly denies. There is not a VERO list. There’s not a technical VERO list. Right. But there is a list of VERO participant profiles. So if a brand says that they want to set up a profile on eBay, they can. And that is the list that I think a lot of sellers refer to.

Doug:

Two excellent points in there. Theresa says, you know, and this is a good point. Don’t say Carter Onesies. Onesies is a term and it’s one of those things like Xerox or Scotch Tape or stuff like that. That’s kind of, it’s a brand term, but it’s been utilized for multiple things across the board. So that’s a branded term. You can’t say Onesie, even if it’s an adult Onesie.

Liz:

I think that that episode could have gone on for two more hours, honestly,

Doug:

Maybe we’ll do another. And you can’t say “inspired by” or “looks like,” or you can’t say, “could be compatible with Lego.”

Liz:

An interesting episode. Like Doug said, we had to work with eBay, eBay corporate comms. We were very fortunate that eBay even allowed that to take place. So we take what we can get when eBay says, yeah, we’ll tell you about our program. And I’m grateful for that.

Doug:

And you know, it’s understandable. Corporate Comms took a look, eBay legal, took a look. There were a couple of things that they wanted to take out. Just the way things were worded. Nothing really like crazy. Yeah. We pulled some stuff out, but you got the gist of it. Julien’s a cool guy. He said, if there are questions, he’ll answer them. So if you have any questions, you can post them in the list, perfectly Facebook group, and we can get them over to Julien.

Liz:

And just find the episode in the Facebook to start a new thread or whatever. And we’ll see about following up, don’t know how long it’ll take. Maybe it’ll be next month’s live cast, but we’ll, we’ll see. Episode 33 with our friend Maria thestylister. This is what I thought was really cool, Doug. So we interview Maria. I post in the Facebook group on Monday, Hey, we talked to Maria, thestylelister and consignmentchats reached out. They interviewed Maria too. So, but here’s, what’s really cool. The very next day, the eBay for Business Podcast drops talking about social media and branding. So this tells me, this is a hot ticket item right now, and we’re just right on the ball with it.

Doug:

I’m going to tell you what it really means Liz. We’re trendsetters, we’re setting the trend. We’re dictating the market. Obviously consignmentchats are friends of ours. They want to do what we’re doing. We want to do what they’re doing. And obviously eBay has to do three branding episodes to compete with our one Liz. Maria thestylister was so hardcore.

Liz:

They heard Doug and Liz and the ladies of consignmentchats got Maria thestylelister on. So they had to do their three episodes. So, listen to Maria on the Seller Community Podcast, episode 33, Maria was a speaker at eBay Open along with all of the fabulous eBay sellers, but you didn’t get a chance to go to eBay Open Online, go to the eBay for Business YouTube channel and watch that. But especially the seller panels, those were by far the most popular, they were all great including Maria’s talking about branding your business. You are a small business. I don’t care if you’re living in the basement with a hundred items, you are a business. And I love how she brings that home.

Doug:

And she gives very actionable stuff. It’s not a ton of stuff. She gives you the high level stuff that you should do. And she’s got that document on our website that you can download. And there’s a worksheet where it’s basically like, hey, answer these questions and it’s all there just to help you out.

Liz:

But with that, so go listen to that episode. A lot of great gems that she drops there, but that ties into what I said in episode 31 about branding. I was listening to consignmentchats on podcasts and they’re taking pictures and I was listening and they were talking about, so Molly was giving a demo on Canva Pro and I’m like, I use Canva Pro and then she starts talking about a branding kit and I had to stop what I was doing right there and put it on YouTube. So I could watch Molly give this whole presentation on how she uses Canva for branding. So that is why consignmentchats is that episode 37. Right. So you can actually go watch that in action. And I know that consignmentchats is going to be working on branding also and coming out with a series. So definitely watch that and listen to the eBay for Business podcasts, because that all comes into it. Audrey Tracy’s back on the pod, I’ve missed her. So she had a great podcast that I listened to yesterday on my walk. Well, I mean Griff with her as a guest. Yeah. Cause I have a chat. Yeah. We’re just totally on pulse with the community. What we need. Do you have anything else on Maria?

Doug:

Canva, like I gotta up my Canva skills.

Liz:

With that, I think that wraps up this month’s episodes of The Seller Community Podcast. Thank you for all the comments. Yeah. Stuart, thank you. Lots of actionable advice from Maria and make sure to listen to consignmentchats too, and see if Maria gives additional advice on branding.

Doug:

Yeah. Throw any questions you have in there. We’ve still got a few minutes and then Liz, there are a couple other things.

Liz:

And then I can say this in my podcasting voice. Thank you so much for my great podcasting voice. My friends used to, so, you know, I’m retired COC, I’ll go off the rails here, retired Air Force. You know, you have to answer the phone in a certain way, yada, yada, yada. And I can be with my friends, the phone rings and then the podcasting voice comes on and it sounds like a totally different person. So I think that’s why I have this voice.

Doug:

She also has a LinkedIn. Well, she changed it. She was Elizabeth O’Kane on LinkedIn, but she changed it to Liz to be consistent with her brand.

Liz:

Apparently Elizabeth, nobody knows who I am. If I call myself Elizabeth, I guess I’ve branded Liz so well. Right? I don’t know, eight minutes left. And I want to make sure that if anybody has any questions and just say to everybody that joined us, they, and it was making me feel like family and not so nervous.

Doug:

We always say, leave us reviews on Apple. If you listen on there, go to the Facebook group, tell us what you want, what you like, what you don’t like, what you want to see more of. If you have any suggestions, anybody you want to have on the show can also email us. If you think you’d be on the show podcast@thesellercommunitypodcast.com. If you have questions and we, you know, we’ve got a long list of people on the show. We’d love to have sellers on. And we do some of our own stuff. We’re always looking to add to that list as well, but any other questions or anything.

Liz:

Thanks Ed. He loves the live format. Thanks for putting up with us and all of our dorkiness. One thing, Doug, I have my long list of notes and you have your sticky notes that you’re set to, but you miss something. Is there something on your notes?

Doug:

We want to push our friend good friend, Theresa Cox’s office hours every Tuesday.

Liz:

Yes. Sure. We want you to go and get your questions answered and learn about List Perfectly because these office hours that Teresa is doing. It’s a one hour zoom every Tuesday at 5 PST. Amazing. So many users are learning so much from office hours.

Doug:

It’s like direct access to your List Perfectly professor, professor Cox, I have a C what can I do to get a B what can I, can I ask you some questions? Can we talk about the test? No. Great. Tuesdays.

Liz:

Theresa is a pro List Perfectly user, pro eBay user, she’s on multiple platforms. And just to be able to get questions answered. And I know some people will come into the office hours and not have any questions, but walk away learning stuff that they didn’t even know. They should have asked the question for that’s true for it was not even a proper sentence. I don’t know. Yeah. This hour has flown by you guys. I’m like, I’m trying to be respectful of everybody’s time. I feel like I’m rushing.

Doug:

That was fun though. And then, you know, let us know too, if you like this, you know, we’ll do it again every month. And I liked it. I think Liz liked it. It was fun. Looks like the listeners liked it. There’s no thumbs down. Watch somebody, ed theresellingwriter. We are going to do every month. So we’ll do it the last week of the month.

Liz:

There’s a user Zenith that had some questions or information that they needed for List Perfectly cross posting to Facebook marketplace, man, we’re all in your shoes. Please join the Facebook group. There are over 7,500 users in that group, and it is a highly active group, so many great sellers with so many great tips, ready, willing, and able to help you out. That’s the group.

Doug:

Yeah. Sellers helping sellers. If you’re not in there, you know, it’s not just List Perfectly and it’s platform stuff, all the, you know, all the platforms, just sellers helping sellers. And that’s what, this is all about, what the podcast is all about. And that’s why we do the live stuff to live without a net Liz, you survived.

Liz:

I survived. I survived an hour. Our second live cast, the first one, just the two of us, maybe I can breathe out some of the tension and get over my live gitters.

Doug:

Watch now tomorrow night it’ll be like; Liz O’Kane is live on YouTube!

Liz:

I forgot to say something last night, by the way, I do have a YouTube channel. It’s just Liz O’Kane and there’s a lot of List Perfectly tips. I’m going to plug myself there. You can follow Doug and I on Instagram, I am @coloradoreworn. Doug is at tell them who you are Doug…

Liz:

Get on there, follow List Perfectly. A lot of cool seller stuff going on TikTok. Thank you, Alex. Thank you, everyone that joined us tonight. And for all of your kind words, this is like, nerve-wracking for me.

Doug:

You gonna cry? You hate to say goodbye?

Liz:

I say goodbye. It’s like, I’m one of those people that it takes you like 20 minutes to say goodbye. When I get off the phone, I’m like, oh, bye. Oh, one more thing. By the way…

Doug:

I got to go.

Liz:

Okay. What do you say, Doug? Do we do the…

Doug:

It would be see you next month, right?

Liz:

Yeah. So we will see you next month. Thank you!

Doug:

Thanks everybody. It was fun.

Liz:

It was fun. Thank you.

Doug:

That would be very helpful. I guess you can record us your review at anchor.fm/sellercommunitypodcast. If you don’t yell at us.

Liz:

Yes, Doug doesn’t do well with that.

Liz:

As in like neither visited, posted in forever.

Doug:

We were like, let’s go live on TikTok and then we can’t figure it out. We couldn’t figure out how to do it. And there were no teenagers around. So we didn’t figure it out.

Doug:

Got this. And then, um, and of course, a great resource is the List Perfectly Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/listperfectly. Anything else, Liz?
